RBA served as engineering consultant on the renovation project of the Clayton Center for the Arts and provided structural condition surveys and reports as well as structural engineering services for the new building. The superstructure is supported by a deep foundation system, and the basement, located below the stage floor and back of the stage house area, is constructed of reinforced concrete walls. The audience chamber is sloped and stepped for the architectural and acoustical requirements. The theater includes an audience chamber and stage house and is constructed of structural steel braced frames. The stage house has several levels of steel framing. The roof is framed with long-span steel trusses supporting a metal deck roof with a suspended catwalk. The classroom wing, recital hall, and flexible theater have two types of framing systems. The first system is a steel column supporting steel composite beams, which support a metal deck and composite concrete slab with a steel roof consisting of bar joists and metal deck. The second system is load-bearing concrete masonry walls supporting hollowcore floor planks. The concrete masonry walls support the floor system and extend up to the roof and support either another level of hollowcore planks to meet acoustical and architectural requirements or a steel bar joist system supporting a metal deck.
