About This Project

The Fred Brown, Jr. Residence Hall is a seven-story student residence that also houses foodservices and dining areas on the first floor. The floors are constructed using a two-way, post-tensioned concrete flat plate to maintain low floor-to-floor heights. To protect the brick, relief joints were placed at every other floor to allow thermal movement of the brick. Concrete shear walls located in the corridors, stair towers, and elevator towers extend from the roof to the foundation for lateral-load resistance. The roof is constructed using a series of light-gauge metal trusses to form the gable roof. The trusses were laid out to provide space for positioning mechanical equipment in the attic. Early release construction documents were developed to provide a fast track construction schedule.
